I had the opportunity recently to write a short prayer guide for our church about the Holy Spirit. My Pastor helped with the title 😉 I wanted to share. I have been in prayer about the Holy Spirit trying to unlearn some wrong theology and I may do more blog posts about what God has revealed to me.
A Reflection on John 14:16-26
Sometimes I read the Gospels with a delayed feeling of FOMO (fear of missing out). Desiring to experience Jesus as the ones who walked with Him. What would it feel like to be hungry and witness Him increase my rations taking bread directly from His hand (John 6:1-14), to meet His eye in the midst of my sin and be drawn into repentance (Luke 22:55-62), to ask for understanding and sit at His feet looking at Him as He lovingly explains (Mark 4:1-34). I love John 13-17. It feels like an intimate invitation into Jesus’s heart for his disciples and future followers. Jesus knew His time was coming up and He wanted to prepare His disciples for that. I imagine their grief would be intense. This was not just the one who was prophesied to save them from persecution. He had become their friend. They knew Him intimately. They were dependent on Him for all their needs having left their jobs and families to follow Him. What would they do now that He was leaving?
The void would feel immense. How hard would it be to remember His word, to keep His commands, to continue the work they had started without Him by their side? Jesus lovingly, explains that just like God had sent Him, that He would also ask God to send the Holy Spirit. This spirit would do all the things that Jesus had done in their presence, He would provide, lead them, teach them and testify about God. He would fill that hole that would be left once Jesus returned to the Father so that they would not be alone. And that same gift is offered to all those who believe.
