Encourage Yourself

I was talking with a friend yesterday about the feeling I get after an inspiring conversation. I often relate this to an “after camp” experience.

Growing up in church, my childhood was full of youth conferences, bible camps, revivals etc. I would spend weeks bonding with other kids, learning new skills and growing closer to Jesus. I would come back from these camps so energized to be better and do better. I felt empowered to pursue my dreams and accomplish anything I put my mind to!

I have these moments sprinkled in my adult years when I hear an amazing sermon at church, listen to an incredible speaker at a leadership conference or podcast or have an inspiring conversation with a friend. I come back from these moments feeling like I can fly! I can literally fly! But the problem is when the dust settles, I am quickly placed back into my reality.  That powerful feeling quickly recedes and within days weeks or even months I am back to the same old mindset.

My friend told me how she has to encourage herself daily to stay on track and remain energized and I thought about how powerful that was. My after camp euphoria was usually motivated by the positivity and energy of the people around me. And I would carry their energy for as long as I could. But the work after camp, after the conference, after the inspiring conversation begins with me and me alone. I have to put in the work and encourage myself daily to keep the energy and momentum going. I have to cast off the worries and anxieties of the world and propel forward.
